Updates at 35 Weeks!

Let’s see, where did I leave off…

Oh, yes, back to November. We had 3 baby showers total. Our mustache bash thrown by our community group friends, a book shower thrown by my momma and mother-in-law and then PK’s work also did a small gifts/cake thing for us! PK’s cousin, Amy, is a L&D nurse at the hospital where we’re going to deliver, so she gave us a tour of the hospital, so now we feel more comfortable with where everything is!

After our showers were over, I think we went into major nesting mode. PK cleaned out the attic and added more flooring up there, so we could prepare for more accumulation of boxes over the next few years. We completely emptied two closets and cleaned out all the junk and organized. I went through all of the baby gifts that we got and categorized everything and made lists of things we still needed.

I had regular checkups on 11/15/12 (31w4d) and 11/29/12 (33w4d) with nothing exciting to report. We also went to a breastfeeding class at the hospital one evening. We spent Thanksgiving in Austin with family. I met with a great pediatrician that I really like, so I’m happy to have that checked off my list too!

This past Saturday, we were signed up for a Childbirth class at the hospital. PK ended up having a business trip, so he wasn’t going to be able to go with me, so I was kinda bitter that I was going to have to go by myself along with my two pillows. However, I only lasted in the class for about 30 minutes before I started feeling faint and having cold sweats. I went outside the classroom and laid down in the hallway for a few minutes. I wasn’t having any labor pains and could still feeling the baby moving, so I was convinced that it was just the start of a cold and needed to go home and go back to bed.

After sleeping and eating back at home, I still was not feeling very good and had a bad headache. And my headache didn’t improve even after taking Tylenol. I was supposed to help babysit a friend’s toddler that night, but on my way over to their house, I started seeing stars and my vision got blurry and it was hard to focus. {Actually, I was seeing sideways sparkly Christmas trees, instead of stars, hah!}

I had heard that blurry vision or seeing stars was a symptom of high blood pressure, so I decided to get my blood pressure checked at a Walgreens on the way. After the first reading was high, I decided to call the on-call doctor to get her recommendation and she suggested that I go ahead and make a trip to Labor & Delivery because these were all symptoms of gestational hypertension.

Although it had been a pretty bad day up until now, more severe freaking out began, especially since PK was still in California on a business trip. AND my parents, who are normally only a few hours away, are at their house in New Mexico for vacation. Luckily, I’ve got great girlfriends, who accompanied me to the hospital! Thank goodness, I was only at the hospital for about 3 hours. They ran some labs on my blood & urine and everything came back clear, and my blood pressure had dropped significantly since arriving at the hospital. I knew it was a good sign when the nurse came in the room with juice and snacks! I was sent home, with orders to take it easy.

I was at home in bed by 9:30pm and PK’s flight landed around midnight. I gave him a pretty big scare, but we both breathed a big sigh of relief when he was home and was not going straight from the airport to the hospital! I’m hoping that was a one-time occurrence and that we’re not battling this for the rest of this pregnancy, but we’ll just have to see! Very thankful that my blood pressure came down and all labs were clear, so I was able to go home and we didn’t have to consider any other scarier options.

Of course, I’m thankful that baby is alright too. We got to hear his heartbeat at the hospital, while I was all hooked up to stuff and he has kicked me about a million times since then to make sure I know that he’s doing okay. Love this little nugget so much already.

Here’s to a less eventful couple of weeks before he arrives!

Book Baby Shower Pics!

A few weekends ago, my mama and mother in law threw us the best book themed baby shower in Austin! This baby boy is pretty lucky... look at all the generations of women who already love him:
One mama (me!), two grandmoms and four great-grandmoms!

This is my brother, Connor, he gave the baby a little frame and photo that says I {heart} my uncle!

My hubby

My parentals

My mother in law and PK's grandma, Alice

We're so blessed to have these people in our lives and are getting more excited with each day that passes to meet this little baby boy who's kicking me!

Updates at 30 weeks

Can’t believe we’re going to have a baby in our arms in about 10 weeks! Eek! Today I’m 30 weeks 4 days along. January will be here before you know it!

In the past few weeks, PK’s parents came up to visit for a weekend and helped us shop for and order a glider chair and ottoman for the baby’s room! Of course it’s like 10 weeks delivery, hoping it arrives before Christmas time. We also bought a car seat/stroller travel system! Got both of those items for 20% off at Buy Buy Baby – woot! Luckily, those they had in stock, but they didn’t have the extra base in stock so that’s still on our list.

{Oh ya… my sister-in-law announced she’s pregnant too! Our fourth niece or nephew is on the way, due in June! Her family just moved cross country to Maryland and luckily they survived Hurricane Sandy without any damage to themselves or their new house!}

Had a regular checkup on 10/18/12 (27w4d) and my doctor said that my hands, feet and face didn’t look swollen, so I thought that was awful nice of her to say. Then on 10/31/12 (29w3d) we had our next sonogram and found out the good news that my placenta has moved up! Yay! So I’m officially off restrictions and don’t have to schedule a C-section early! Baby was about 3 lbs and 26th percentile again.

This past weekend we took our first class at the hospital for baby CPR and general baby care. I thought it was pretty good information and was glad that we took the time to do it! Then we got to have our first baby shower thrown by our community group!! They through us a couples “Moustache Bash” shower and my parents and PK’s mom were even able to attend! The décor and theme was absolutely adorable, they had different mustaches and a fabric backdrop for mustache photo ops. Everything was great – the food, the company, the gifts, what a blessing these sweet friends are! Emily’s two blog posts describe it best with pictures! See here for the décor and prep and here for photos of all the peeps!

Lots of things to look forward to in the coming weeks! We’re going on a tour of the hospital this evening and then another baby shower this weekend! Lots to be thankful for. Happy November!

TGIF!

Poor Ranger has kennel cough, which is just a fancy name for a dog cold, like a human would get. We initially thought he had something stuck in his throat, but the vet confirmed it was kennel cough, which he probably got from being boarded while we were on our BabyMoon (even though he was vaccinated). So we made an early trip to the vet this morning, I felt like we were practicing for the “do we go to the doctor?” dilemma for our future baby boy.

Good news today – I passed my glucose tolerance test! I had to go yesterday and drink the orange soda and get my blood drawn after an hour of sitting in the waiting room. And got the good news today that I passed, whew. Now give me a piece of cake.

We did order our crib earlier this week! Who knew those things took 6-8 weeks to ship… hoping that the crib will arrive before baby boy arrives! Although, we probably will keep baby boy in our room for the first few weeks, so I guess it doesn’t really matter, but it sure does help in the “feel like we’re actually getting our lives ready for a baby” department.

Like I mentioned last post, PK’s brother Chris is on vacation and he came to town to visit! So, today and tomorrow, they are having some serious man time. Golf. Movie. Beer. Shooting range. Etc. PK is in his happy place when his brother is around.

My brother texted me today and suggested the name, Rupert, for our baby boy. Has a ring to it, doesn’t it? Haha! PK and Chris were discussing a serious name bracket, like march madness. Our baby name bracket even involved teams, winners, cash prizes, etc. It was pretty involved, so let us know if you wanna get in on that action, haha!

Looking forward to a cool relaxing weekend! TGIF! RIP Big Tex.

Second Trimester

Sorry for the long break between posts, but here’s my long recap of the 2nd trimester! I promise I’m going to post more pictures and updates as the third trimester goes along! Is it just me or does the second trimester seem like it’s so much longer than the first? Anyways starting back up where we left of…

On 07/09/12 (13w1d) I had a checkup appointment with my doctor. They couldn’t find the heartbeat with the Doppler machine, so I had to get a quick sonogram to find the heartbeat. Baby’s heartbeat was 155. We found out all sorts of good results from blood tests at this appointment. All blood work was normal, negative for cystic fibrosis carrier screening, A+ blood type, etc.

The next day, 07/10/12 (13w2d) I had an appointment with another doctor to get my nuchal translucency sonogram done. The neck measurement and nose bone appeared normal. They also took blood and called a few days later to say that blood work looked normal, risk of down syndrome/trisomy 18 is 1 in 10,000, which are supposedly the best results we could get from that test. Also, she was able to tell us that she was 95% positive our little baby was a BOY! PK was beaming. We called family and texted friends telling them the gender news.

The next day, 07/11/12 (13w3d) I had lunch with my bosses at work and filled them in on my exciting news. Also, this day, we shared our news on facebook! Totally felt like a big secret weight was lifted off our shoulders!

My 25th birthday was in July and I got some maternity clothes, some baby boy clothes and PK even got me some pacis with Texas Rangers on them! My mom, brother and grandparents came to visit the weekend before and we celebrated with mini-bundt cakes.

The next round of appointments occurred on 08/06/12 (17w1d). I got blood taken again for a follow-up 2nd trimester screening. They called again a few days later and said blood work looked normal. Risk of down syndrome/trisomy 18 is still 1 in 10,000 and risk of spina bifida is 1 in 220. In my appointment with my regular doctor, they found baby’s heartbeat with the Doppler, 150 beats. I filled my doctor in on how I was still taking Zofran very consistently for nausea and occasionally Tylenol for headaches. At this appointment, I still had not gained any weight since becoming pregnant, meaning I was still definitely feeling sick and not eating normal. My belly measured at 17cm, right on track!

In August, we went to Austin to see family and saw PK’s parents off before they went to see Chris on a Mediterranean cruise! We started our baby registries at Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby. We also got to meet sweet baby Sophia, who arrived a little bit earlier than expected to our friends, Whitney and Clint. We attended an expecting parents class at our church one Saturday, talk about a lot of information on one day. And over Labor Day, we went to Wagmore with my family for some colder mountain air.

Somewhere around 18-19 weeks, is where I would say my coat of crappiness was finally lifted. I was finally able to go for longer stretches without getting nauseous and taking Zofran. And slowly started eating more normal meals and portions and feeling more like myself. Yahoo!

On 09/05/12 (21w3d), I had a checkup appointment with my doctor and a sonogram! As far as my stats, I gained a bunch of weight from weeks 17 to 21, so it was obvious that I was back to eating normal and not puking as much. My tummy measured at 20.5cm, right on track. As far as the baby goes, heartbeat was 145, approx weight was 14oz, measured at 21w1d. The sono tech confirmed that baby is a boy and checked things like umbilical cord, appendages, stomach, bladder, kidneys, heart, etc. Baby was in breech position (feet down), so the sono tech said it was hard to get a lot of good images and the baby was making it hard on her. When we spoke to the doctor at this appointment, she said that they were unable to get a good picture of the baby’s heart. May have been too early, since optimal time to look at the heart is 24 weeks, may have been the breech position he was in, but regardless she wanted me to come back for another sonogram in 4 weeks. Also, she said that the placenta was positioned very low, close to the cervix, so the chances were still very good that the placenta would move up, but they would check the placenta location at my next sonogram as well.

Somewhere around 21-22 weeks is where I could officially feel baby moving. Still seemed very faint and sporadic, but around this time I could actually tell you that I could feel him moving, but I could never be too sure before.

In September, my best friend from TCU, Courtney had her baby girl Chloe! Can’t wait to get to meet her someday! Also, we made another trip to Austin to see family. While in Austin, mom and I found a cute rug & blanket with a striped pattern that is my inspiration for baby’s room. Good boy colors…blues, greens, and some red and yellow thrown in there too. We picked out a few fabrics and my mom is going to sew a few things like curtains, crib sheet and skirt! Later in the month, my parents and brother came up for a weekend and we all went to a Cowboys game (they even won!).

On 10/03/12 (25w3d), PK and I took off work with an agenda to get a bunch of baby stuff checked off our list. The night before we started our baby registry at Target. And we started off the day by visiting daycares. We really liked one of the ones we visited and were very pleased to find one we are comfortable with, that’s close and in our price range! Talk about another exhausting and overwhelming topic to tackle. We also had our next round of doctor’s appointments. At my checkup, belly measured at 26cm and gained a bunch of weight again. At the sonogram, baby’s heartbeat was 145 and measured about 1 lb 11oz (26% percentile for weight). Baby’s heart looked great, no issues there. Placenta still very low, partially encroaching the cervix and officially termed placenta previa. There’s still a good chance that the placenta will move up before baby is ready to come out, so that’s what we’re hoping for! If it doesn’t move up, then we’ll be looking at a C-section a few weeks before due date.

On 10/06/12 (25w6d), we started our local babymoon! We dropped off Ranger for boarding, went out for brunch and to see a movie. Then we drove downtown, found some food trucks for lunch and checked into a hotel. We went to fancy dinner, with a great view of downtown, and to a Cirque de Soleil show! The next morning, we laid in bed forever, watched a movie and got breakfast. It was a cold and cloudy weekend, perfect for lying in bed the rest of Sunday afternoon after we picked up Ranger. It was just what we needed to do some fun things that will be harder to do with baby in tow!

We just got back from a weekend in Austin, attended a baby shower and got to pick up Chris from the airport; he’s back in the USA for a vacation from cruising! We are ready to get the nursery all set up, buying a crib is on the agenda for this week. I feel like I’m in a “sweet spot” right now. I feel great most of the time and have energy to get things done, so I’m trying to take advantage before I get further into the 3rd trimester! Also, in the third trimester, I’m looking forward to a few baby showers, baby classes at the hospital, cooler weather, holidays and getting ready for baby to arrive!

First Trimester

This recap will probably be mostly for me to come back and read down the road when I don’t remember any of these details. Our first positive pregnancy test occurred on 05/06/12, and I was 4 weeks 3 days (4w3d) along. On this day, we planted a tree in our backyard! It was a burr oak tree that PK’s grandparents had given us and the timing just worked out perfectly that we could plant this tree on the day we found out that I was pregnant! The tree is only about 6-8 inches high, so we’re hoping that this tree will start to grow big and strong, as long as Ranger doesn’t mess with the wire mesh we have around it to protect it from him!

That following weekend we were headed on an extended weekend vacation with PK’s family. So on our way we drove through Austin and told my folks before heading down to Port Aransas. On our vacation we told PK’s immediate family and then even saw my grandparents in Corpus and told them. Within the next few weeks, we told the rest of the grandparents and our community group!

My first nauseous day was 05/21/12 (6w4d) and I only lasted a little over a week before filling my first prescription of Zofran (anti-nausea drug prescribed from my doctor) on 05/29/12 (7w5d).

We had a nurse appointment on 05/24/12 (7w0d) where we got a bunch of information and watched an informational video from our doctor. Then our first doctor’s appointment and sonogram was on 06/07/12 (9w0d). At that appointment our baby measured 8w4d, heartbeat was 175, measured at 20mm and due date determined as January 13, 2013! After this appointment, we told more extended family and friends.

We received so many kind notes, cards, emails and gifts! My sweet friend, Emily, even gave me an awesome anti-nausea kit filled with all sorts of goodies!

In June and July, we attended two family reunions and started to spread the news even further. We even discovered that one of PK’s cousins is a labor & delivery nurse at the hospital where we will deliver, so we got lots of inside scoop and will even get a personal tour of the hospital!

Alright, let’s talk mental, emotional & physical. Mentally I’ve definitely suffered from the {brain drain} as my doctor called it. Particularly when it comes to numbers and dates, which I’m normally pretty quick with. So my sweet husband of course thinks this is hilarious and will continually test me on my math skills. This had been going on for a few weeks and then it got really embarrassing when I tried to tell my doctor that my baby was due in 2012, not 2013. Woops. That’s when she proceeded to explain the {brain drain} and how all the blood is leaving my head and headed south.

Emotionally: most of the time I felt pretty normal, except for every once in a while when I get so tired of not feeling good that I throw a pity party for myself. Most of the time, PK just bears the brunt of the pity party, maybe my mom and a close friend too.

Physically: ugh. I feel like I could write an entire book on feeling crappy all the time and how to poorly handle it. Long story short, I’m still taking Zofran every day. I feel some version of crappy every day. I eat an average of 3 bananas a day. It’s a constant struggle between not being too hungry and not being too full, which normally means about 18 small snacks a day to keep something in my stomach at all times. The last 8+ weeks have totally changed my relationship with food. I can look at a food and tell you that after I ate it how I would feel afterwards and how many minutes it would buy me until I needed to eat something again. I feel like I am just trying to eat enough to survive…eating to live, instead of living to eat. See what happened there? I just threw myself a little word pity party. Trying to remember this verse every time I feel crappy and I start to throw myself a pity party…

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 “‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

My favorite quote so far has been from my Nana who said, “My doctor used to ask me 'How do you feel outside of being pregnant?’ And that kinda cut down the complaints, I guess.”

It's Baby's World Now

It’s not going to be Ranger’s World for much longer around here… because there’s a baby on the way! We found out earlier this week that the doctor is 95% sure this baby is a BOY! I don’t think Ranger has fully comprehended the life change that’s coming…and it’s not like we have either.   Baby boy’s due date is January 13, 2013. Today I am 13w5d (13 weeks 5 days).   This sonogram picture below was taken at 13w2d, he is waiving hello to you and you and you!

Catching Up

Guess I need to catch up on my blogging. Been a coon’s age since I put anything up here. I’ve even got the running list of things I want to blog about, but just haven’t made time for yet. No pictures in this post, updated pictures from life will come soon enough. So here goes a few random topics that I’ve been meaning to cover.

Ranger already has old man hips. He now has to take a vitamin for his joints twice a day. After all, we was a clearance puppy.

I love summer. It’s the season of showers and weddings and family reunions for us. We have lots of friends and family that are having babies, getting married or coming into town to visit. So blessed to have wonderful people surrounding us. How did we get so lucky?

So jealous of my brother-in-law Chris who is sailing in the Mediterranean! For those people in the back, he’s a musical entertainer on a cruise line and just started his first abroad tour. He sends postcards and posts pictures from Italy, so jealous. We did get to spend some quality time with him while he was in Texas though. We went to the coast for a long weekend and spent time at the beach, fishing and catching up.

In one week, we went to our HOA meeting and a neighbor’s crawfish boil. We will miss the community wide garage sale this weekend, since we’ll be at a family reunion. But we even offered up our cove to host the annual block party this year, I guess we’ll see how the other neighbors feel about that! We’re by far the youngest people in our neighborhood and the newest family to the neighborhood, but I was {THIS CLOSE} to signing up for a committee or secretary or something!

This past weekend, we went to Austin and got to meet our 4-month-old niece and nephew twins for the first time! And Jarvis, our very first nephew is now a full-of-energy 2 year old! We got to spend precious time with all of them. We don’t get to see them as much as we would like since their family lives in North Dakota, so we take full advantage while they’re in Texas… we’ll see them 3 weekends in a row in June!

Enough rambling for this Thursday! Ciao bella!

Beards

Beards, beards, beards. These two don't look like brothers at all, hah!
The future Ray generations will not have any trouble growing facial hair.
Love getting to spend time with Chris, PK's brother. And always sad when he ships off again.

Group Love

This is my friend Callie, she's pregnant with a sweet baby boy, who is going to be named Moses. They came to our neck of the woods last weekend. We got to spend time with them, shower them with gifts and touch her belly. You can see more about her and her hubby's life here.
One of the little girls in our group, Maggie, had her 2-year old birthday on Saturday, here's me in the middle, Ashley on the left and Callie on the right, holding Cohen. Cohen's sweet mama couldn't come to the party because she had to work, but we missed her dearly and snapped lots of photos for her to see. See more of their adventures with Cohen here.
Here's the birthday girl, Maggie, and her parents helping sing happy birthday! She was ready to eat that cupcake! Can't believe that this little girl is already 2 years old, I feel like it was just yesterday thtat we met Sallie and she was pregnant. Follow Tyler, Sallie & Maggie here.
And here are some of our group just chilling on the playscape...
Can't go wrong with some group love. Life wouldn't be the same without these wonderful friends.

Baby Cooper

This is my BFF, Courtney. She is pregnant, yay! She lives in Alaska, boo. She came to Texas for a baby shower, yay! This is her first baby and I was so excited to be able to touch that belly.
It was a gender reveal baby shower -- the big secret hid in this box.
I made these mustaches & bows and when people walked in the door, they had to pick which one they thought the baby was going to be!
We decorated onesies and everyone really got into it! I made the one on the right, which says somebody in texas loves me! I also love the one of the left that says super duper cooper!
After some mingling, some eating, some onesie making and some games, Courtney made the big reveal! It's a girl!!
So happy for my sweet sweet friend. I can't wait to meet that little baby girl. You can follow Courtney on her blog here.

Front Yard

Since this is the first spring in our house, we're still trying to figure out the whole landscaping thing. From what we can tell, the previous owners totally redid the front yard and planted a bunch of stuff right before they put the house on the market. Throughout the summer, about half of what they just planted totally died. So our yard has been looking pretty wimpy for a little while.

But the two pictures below are some bushes that did survive! Our knock out rose bush has had dozens of beautiful pink blooms this March and April.

So today, we headed to Lowe's and stocked up on some more plants/bushes to help fill in some of the blank areas in the front.

See those two in their pots still are new ones that we added to this side of the yard.

These are our three newbies for the left side of the yard. We got another knock out rose to match the other side and then two other kinds of bushes.

Of course, Ranger was our watchdog. Since we're pretty close to a park, there are always people walking by. He's gotten pretty good about staying put when we tell him to. We also met more neighbors today, that's the benefit of being out in the yard!

Here's the view of these new three bushes in the ground. Can't wait til they start growing and getting bigger!

We finally decided to investigate the smaller tree in our front yard and discovered that one large branch didn't have any leaves on it. So after some further chopping, we saw that ants had totally taken over that entire branch, so it was totally dead. So now that the dead branch is gone, the tree looks much better.

It was actually pretty cloudy and windy today, so it was a good day to get some things done in the yard, instead of it being brutally hot. Right as we finished, it started sprinkling on us. I am so happy that we are finally taking interest in our yard and can't wait to see what it looks like after things start to grow bigger!

Happy Easter!

Happy Good Friday to you!
Happy Rangers opening day to you!

It was my hubby's birthday last week and he got a birthday iPad! He's been obsessed ever since.

I had Good Friday off as a holiday, so this is what Ranger and i did today:
No, really I did a ton of laundry, housework and grocery shopping. Who knew grocery shopping was so much more awesome during the week, instead of on the weekends.

Here's PK & Ranger watching the Rangers game and playing on the iPad. He got to wear jeans and a Rangers t-shirt to work today.

This weekend we're cleaning up the house, going to plant some new flowers in the gardens in the front yard. Then we're excited to have friends over to our house on Saturday night. And looking forward to the Easter service at Watermark on Sunday. So thankful for my Savior who died on a cross for my sins. Happy Easter weekend to you all!

Happy Spring

Life has been pretty good around these parts. PK just recently started a new job, so we're still settling into our new life routine and I'm liking it. This spring is the first that we've been in our house, so we've started to think lots more about the landscape, gardens, yard, etc. Ah, the joys of home ownership.
Here's Ranger on St. Patty's day, he's giving me that look like, "quit embarassing me and putting stuff on me and taking pictures of me."
And here's PK's latest Pinterest-like creation. A few months ago, PK made this gorgeous cutting board. And now he created this very cool contraption for the cutting board to hang on the island in our kitchen and then flip up whenever you need to chop something! Isn't it wonderful?

Here are a few flowers I've got growing in the kitchen! I'm looking forward to growing more plants and learning more about gardening. I feel like I've already pulled 2,000 weeds.
Happy Spring!

Homemade pizza & dog play

Ranger & Boss are BDFF (Best Dog Friends Forever). Here they are holding paws.
Whitney & Clint came to visit for the weekend and we made homemade pizza!
Although it rained most of the weekend, we finally got outside to walk the dogs on Sunday.

We always enjoy spending time with them. They just recently made a big announcement on their blog, go check it out here!

Weekend with the dogs (and family)

Here's a few photos of the dogs this past weekend, when we went to visit family. We did actually visit family, but for some reason I never seem to catch very many photos of humans, mostly canines.

This is what Ranger looked like when we got home. So exhausted he was practically falling off the couch.

Primitive Camping

A few weekends ago, our little family went camping.

 Our sweet little "primitive" cabin.
An inside view of the cabin. Perfect size for us.

It even had a screened in patio which was perfect. Ranger liked to go out there and watch out for predators.
Camping included lots of family walks and talks.
There were two twin beds that we just pushed together. Here's Ranger getting comfty in my sleeping bag.
Check out this action shot -- Ranger is mid-air trying to figure out what PK is going standing in his sleeping bag.
We spent all Sunday morning sitting on the porch, in our sleeping bags, reading the Word, listening to music, eating cookies for breakfast and playing games on our phones. The hours just flew by.
Sleepy dog on the ride home.

This weekend was a must-repeat!
